Godfrey Hlavaty, 92, Lifelong Stamford Resident

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Godfrey A. Hlavaty (Barney), husband, father and grandfather, died Saturday at the age of 92. 

He was a lifelong Stamford resident and member of St. Bridget's Parish. 

One of seven children, he was born Aug. 9, 1923, in Stamford, to the late Joseph and Anna Hlavaty. 

He graduated from Stamford High School and at the age of 19 was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving as an infantryman (79th Infantry Division), in campaigns across Europe during World War II. 

Returning to Stamford after the war, he married Blanche Monnard Oct. 25, 1958, and worked as a tool and die maker for local manufacturers, including FAG Bearings and Omega Engineering. 

He is survived by his wife Blanche Hlavaty of Stamford; daughters Michelle (husband Gary and granddaughter Marisa) Tomaino of Denville, N.J., Renee (husband Kenneth; grandsons Kyle and Christopher) Buckley of Newtown, Joanne (husband Greg, and grandchildren Luke and Lindsey) Sherwood of Newtown; son Jeffrey (grandsons Jake and Kevin) Hlavaty of Wallingford; and sister Emma Soff of Riga, Mich. 

He was predeceased by brothers Edward, Charles and Joseph Hlavaty, and sisters Helene Coppola and Mary Masso. 

Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home in Stamford.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bridget's Church, followed by burial in St. John Cemetery, 25 Camp Ave., Darien.
