Gerald Brodsky, 89, Longtime Stamford Resident

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Gerald Brodsky, 89, of Stamford, the son of Ann and Samuel Brodsky, died peacefully at home Thursday, June 18.

Born In Newark, N.J., he grew up in Kenilworth, N.J., and left for the U.S. Navy in World War II on his 18th birthday. He served on a destroyer, the USS Eberle, in the Pacific. Upon his return, he resumed his college education at Newark College of Engineering, was elected to Tau Beta Pi honor society and president of Tau Delta Phi fraternity while earning a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.S. in management engineering.

Brodsky spent 16 years with the Ronson Corp., 11 of which were at the Delaware Water Gap Division, where he progressed to vice president of operations. During that time, while living in Stroudsburg, Pa., he was president of an award-winning chapter of B'nai B'rlth, vice president of Temple Israel, board member of the American Cancer Society and Boy Scout Area Council and a Rotary Club member.

He was recruited by Gorham Silver Co., in Providence, R.I., to become vice president of manufacturing and engineering. He was asked to help organize the Environmental Protection Department for the city of Stamford, and he did the same for the state of Connecticut. He then went on as a consultant at the federal level of EPA.

He retired in 2001 after serving as executive vice president at idesco, a New York City-based safety products company for almost 25 years.

While living in Stamford for 45 years, Brodsky served on the board of directors for Congregation Agudath Sholom, on many committees, and set up an employment aid program to assist unemployed members affected by the recession, provided transportation for patients to cancer and dialysis treatments, and sang with the men's and mixed choirs, as well as the Stamford Men's Association Songsters.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Phyllis,; a daughter, Meryl Goidhammer (Joel); sons, Mark Brodsky and Steven Brodsky; daughter-in-law, Valerie Cooke; and seven, grandchildren, Joshua Stafman, Laura Stafman, Jason Brodsky (Weiyi), Alexandra Brodsky, Moir Brodsky, Maayan Brodsky, Esther Brodsky; and a sister, Phyllis Kaplan
