George Maintanis, 74 Of Stamford; Teacher And Coach At Wright Tech

STAMFORD, Conn. -- George Maintanis, 74, died peacefully in his sleep Thursday, Feb. 26.

Maintanis was born April 9, 1940 in Stamford to the late Christo and Mary Maintanis. He was a 1958 graduate of Saint Basil's Preparatory School in Stamford, where he played on the baseball and basketball teams.

He spent most of his career as a teacher and sports coach at J.M.Wright Technical High School, and his passion for sports continued with the City of Stamford, where he served as an umpire and referee.

He is survived by his daughters, Karen Mocciae and her husband Michael, of Milford, and Christine Murray, also of Milford; and  grandchildren; Dennis, Lauren and Courtney Murray. Maintanis also is survived by his sisters, Joan Philippopoulos of Stamford and Christina Malloy and her husband Brien, of Stamford, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Maintanis.

Family will receive relatives and friends at the Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford from 4-8 p.m. Friday. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Ave., Stamford.
