Frederick Fontneau, 88, Of Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. – Frederick W. Fontneau, 88, of Stamford, formerly of West Haven, died Monday, Jan. 26.

He was the son of Margaret Donovan and Pierre Fontneau, and the husband of Joan Convery Fontneau.

He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Maritime as a radio operator and later in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a graduate of New Haven State Teachers College, where he met the love of his life, Joan. He received his master's degree and sixth year in administration from Fairfield University.

Fontneau enjoyed a rewarding career as a teacher and principal in the Stamford public school system for more than 30 years. He would often be found at Cove Island Park and the Darien YMCA. He was an avid high school sports enthusiast and loved the New York Giants and the UConn Huskies.

He was predeceased by his wife, Joan; one granddaughter; and two brothers.

He is survived by his family of four children: Lisa Whelan and her husband, Bill, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; Jon Fontneau and his wife, Heidi, of Monroe, Conn.; Cary Roth and her husband, Rich, of Rogers, Ark.; and Brian Fontneau and his wife, Karen, of Monroe; 14 grandchildren; a brother in Hamden, Conn.; two sisters-in-law in Fairfield and Milford; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 707 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe. No calling hours will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a scholarship in Fred's memory to the Stamford Public School System, c/o Tom Gallagher at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., Stamford, CT 06902.
