Frank Cavaliere Sr., 87, Stamford Resident Founded Excavation Company

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Frank D. Cavaliere Sr., 87, longtime resident of Stamford, died March 7.

Cavaliere was born Sept. 23, 1927, in New Brunswick, N.J. to the late Frank Cavaliere. Cavaliere graduated from Yale and Towne, a trade school, where he trained to be a tool and dye maker. He later served in the U.S Army Air Force during World War II, from 1945-47, as a Private First Class. He was stationed in Atlanta and later Okinawa, Japan and received an honorable discharge in 1947.

Upon his return to the United States, he founded an excavation company, "C&P Excavation," in Stamford with his brother in law, Tony Portanova, and brother, Dominick Cavaliere. Cavaliere also was instrumental in developing many commercial real estate properties in Stamford.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Stamford. He also spent many years at a home he had built in Manchester, Vt., which he was able to share with all of his family members, enjoying snow-mobiling, skiing, laughing and living life to the fullest.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carmella (nee Faugno) Cavaliere, his two sons, Frank D. Cavaliere Jr., and Mark Cavaliere, both of Stamford; brothers Carlo Cavaliere and wife Barbara, Dominick Cavaliere and wife Lois and his sisters, Theresa Savitz and husband Donald, Carmella Portanova and Beatrice Cooke; grandchildren, Justin, Olivia, Carina, Allie and Nikki Cavaliere; and great-grandson Liam Cavaliere; and 22 nieces and nephews.

Cavaliere was preceded in death by his father, Frank Sr. and brothers-in-law Anthony Portanova, George Cooke and John DePoli.

Friends and relatives may call on the Cavaliere family from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., Stamford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 1200 Shippan Avenue, Stamford. Entombment will immediately follow the mass at St. John R.C. Cemetery in Darien for immediate family.
