Elsie Shuetz, 79, Retired Stamford Hospital Nurse

DARIEN, Conn. – Elsie S. Schuetz of Darien died Oct. 15 at home, surrounded by her family. She was 79. 

Born Nov. 12, 1932, she was the daughter of Charles B. and Grace Toms Stewart. After graduating from Stamford Hospital School of Nursing in 1954, she spent her career working in nursing and retired from Stamford Hospital in 1992. 

Schuetz is survived by a daughter, Donna S. (Daniel) Gendreau, of Darien; three sons, Russell V. Schuetz Jr., of Enfield, Conn., Douglas S. (Alyse) McEwen, of Higganum, Conn., and Gary L. (Michele) McEwen, of Oxford, Conn.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Russell V. Schuetz Sr.; her stepmother, Alice Herburt Stewart; a brother, Alan C. Stewart; and a nephew, Robert H. Stewart. 

Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home and Crematory in Stamford. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. A funeral service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. John Episcopal Church in Stamford. Burial will be private. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish-Foundation of Connecticut, 126 Monroe Turnpike, Trumbull, CT 06611.
