He was born in Stamford on July 31, 1930, and was one of 10 children born to the late Robert and Mary Ann (Prizio) Springer. He was born at 1 Main Street in Stamford and attended Stamford public schools. He excelled in football at Stamford High School and other local football clubs on the east coast. He also had a short-lived career as a boxer and as a skater for the Philadelphia Panthers Professional Roller Derby Team.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve / Connecticut National Guard 192nd Division from 1944 to 1955. He first enlisted at the age of 13 during WWII, where he served in the South Pacific. In his time with the Army Reserve, he was called up to federal duty on at least two occasions during the Korean Conflict.
He was a long time parishioner of St. Leo's Parish in Stamford.
While raising his family in Stamford, he was actively involved in youth sports leagues, school organizations and even backstage at his daughter's dance recitals. At the time of his death, he was retired from the IBT Teamsters Local 191 after a 44-year career as a professional truck driver.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Josephine Ann (Kozlinski) Springer; his son; Edwin R. Springer, Jr. (Susan); his two daughters, Cynthia Casterella (Barry); and Patricia Kallas (Christopher); six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two sisters; four brothers; and many godchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother and two sisters.
Friends and relatives may offer their sympathy and condolences Thursday, July 9 from 4-8 p.m. at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., Stamford. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, July 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Leo Roman Catholic Church, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford. The committal service and interment will immediately follow mass at St. John Cemetery in Darien, Connecticut.
