Dr. Herman R. Schoenwald, 82, Attending Physician At Stamford Hospital

ROWAYTON, Conn. - Dr. Herman R. Schoenwald of Rowayton, and formerly of Darien, died Aug. 10. He was 82.

Schoenwald was born Feb. 5, 1932, to Herman and Minnie Schoenwald in Binghamton, N.Y. He attended Greenwich High School and Fordham University, and then received his medical degree from Georgetown University in 1958.

Schoenwald was a captain in the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a physician at Sembach Air Base in Germany. He then went into the family practice of medicine in Darien and later specialized in adolescent and adult psychiatry, completing his residency at Yale University in 1970. In addition to his lengthy private practice of psychiatry in Darien (1972 to  2007), he held positions as chief of psychiatry at St. Joseph's Hospital (1987 to 1999); as attending physician, medical student/resident teacher, and medical board member at Stamford Hospital; and as consultant and Medical Board Member at Courtland Gardens Health Center.

He and his family were members of the Middlesex Club and the Darien Boat Club. He was a member at Norwalk's Ischoda Yacht Club, and rose in the ranks, culminating with terms as vice commodore and commodore and served on Ischoda's Board of Governors. In his retirement, he volunteered at the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium, the Norwalk Oyster Festival, and the Tully Health Center.

Schoenwald is survived by his wife, Joan Schoenwald; children, Catherine, Carl, Christine and Clare; and seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was predeceased by his parents.

Calling hours are Friday, Aug. 15, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at St. John's Church at 1986 Post Road, Darien. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery in Norwalk.
