Dino G. Zapherson, 83, Former Stamford Resident

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Dino G. Zapherson of Black Mountain, formerly of Stamford and Norwalk, Conn., died July 2. He was 83.

Zapherson was born Jan. 22, 1931, in Norwalk, Conn., to George and Katina Zapherson. He served in the Korean War in 1953 as a dental mechanic. After his marriage he lived with his family in Stamford for approximately 20 years before retiring to Boca Raton, Fla. After 18 years in Florida they moved back to the Harborview area of Norwalk. After that he moved down to live with his son Michael and family in Arden, N.C., and recently moved to the North Carolina State Veteran Home in Black Mountain, N.C.

He worked for many years in the retail industry and started out in Miles Shoes of Stamford, Conn. He later worked in the carpet business both for a large carpet company, and also with his own carpet business. He was also a partner with his wife Helen managing a Ceramics Studio that grew from a small home business to a larger business with a storefront in Springdale.

Zapherson is survived his sons, George (June) of Monroe, Conn., and Michael (Gillan) of Arden N.C.; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Helen Zapherson; and sister, Marie of Norwalk.

Calling hours are Thursday, July 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk. Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 11 at 10 a.m. in Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, 238 West Rocks Road, Norwalk. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Ave., Norwalk.
