Deaconess Ruth Lawson, 77, Of Stamford, Worked At Pitney Bowes

DANBURY, Conn. - Deaconess (Emeritus) Ruth Lawson Jones died April 28. She was 77.

Lawson was born July 21, 1935, in Lugoff, S.C. to Flori Deas Lawson Pickett and John Henry Lawson. She later moved to Stamford, where she graduated from Stamford High School in 1954. She was a longtime employee of Pitney Bowes in Stamford as a data entry operator. After relocating to Danbury she was employed at Duracell and later became a certified nurses assistance (CNA) and worked in the Danbury area until her retirement.

She attended Stamford Data Processing School and completed courses in the operation of the IBM keypunch and verifying machines on Aug. 14, 1964. She completed adult education programs in Accounting I, April 1988 and Basic Word Processing May 1988 from Danbury Public Schools. She also completed the Nurse Aide Certification course at Norwalk Community College, April 1991.

Lawson has been a member of New Hope Baptist Church for more than 35 years where she served in the ministry areas of deaconess and missionary. She was employed by the Cherry Street Association in the church’s computer room and the H.O.P.E. after school program.

Lawson is survived by son, Dennis Jones, Sr., (Roxanne Jones) of Bridgeport; daughter, Minister Michelle Y. Jones of Mableton, Ga.; a granddaughter; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and one god-granddaughter; sisters, Delores Sykes-Williams and Gloria Page both of Paterson, N.J.; brother-in-law, Sam Fleming of Lugoff, S.C.; two sisters–in-law, Catherine Anderson of Anderson, S.C. and Georgia Sledge of Stamford; three aunts; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Deacon John Henry Jones; sisters, Charliece Thompson and Shirley Fleming; brother, James Louis Pickett, Jr. “Jimmy”; and step-father, James Pickett, Sr.

Calling hours are Monday, May 6 at 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Reverend Leroy Parker will be officiating. Services will be at New Hope Baptist Church, 10 Dr. Aaron Samuels Blvd, Danbury.
