Laventhol was a longtime employee of Times Mirror, and the publisher for the company from September 1989 until January 1994. During his tenure, he created New York Newsday, a citywide newspaper that competed for circulation with other New York dailies. The paper was an off-shoot of Newsday, which before Laventhol’s arrival had primarily served Long Island.

Over a career spanning 50 years, Laventhol became an editor at the St. Petersburg Times, an editor at the now-defunct New York Herald Tribune and the Washington Post, and publisher of Newsday. While with Times Mirror, he was the vice president of the Eastern Division of newspapers, which included The Advocate, Greenwich Time, Hartford Courant, Baltimore Sun, Allentown Morning Call in Pennsylvania and Newsday.

Laventhol was born July 15, 1933, in Philadelphia. He received his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1957 and his master's from the University of Minnesota in 1960.
