Catherine W. Davis, 88, Retired Stamford Hospital Employee

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Catherine W. Davis of Bridgeport died Wednesday, Aug. 6. She was 88.

Davis was born in Sumter, S.C., to Joseph and Blanch Tony. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Sumter, S.C. After her marriage, her family relocated to Baltimore, and in 1946 to Bridgeport.

Wilhelmenia worked at the H. O. Canfield Company in Bridgeport and worked as a domestic housekeeper while putting herself through nursing school. In 1960 she completed her nursing training and worked at Bridgeport Hospital, the VA Hospital in West Haven and finally retired from Stamford Hospital in Stamford. She was a member of Walters AME Church on Gregory Street in Bridgeport, for over 60 years and worked with the Missionary Society and various other committees. She was also a past matron of Oriental Chapter # 8, Order of Eastern Star Prince Hall, Herrons Of Jericho and the Order of Sirens.

Davis is survived by her husband, Thomas Davis; son, James Davis; daughters-in-law, Rebecca Davis and Kimberly Davis; siblings, Rosemary Colclough, Dorothy Carr, Lisa Freeman, Marie Harper, Leon Griffin and Thomas Way; numerous cousins; nieces, nephews; extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Morton's Mortuary, Inc., 25 Margaret E Morton Lane, Bridgeport. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 110 Grove St., Bridgeport with Rev. Janine Hawkins, officiating. Interment will take place in Mt. Grove Cemetery, Easton following the service.
