Avis Tippman, 91, Stamford Native

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Avis June Covert Tippman, a longtime New Canaan resident, died Jan. 28 at Waveny Care Center following a prolonged illness. She was 91.

Tippman was born April 19, 1921, in Herkimer, N.Y., to George Earl Covert and Pearl Foudy. She moved to Stamford in 1933 and graduated from Stamford High School in 1939. She graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in 1941.

She worked at various jobs in New York City during World War II and married Donald Dunn Tippman in 1942. She moved to New Canaan in 1946.

In the late 1950s and 1960s, Tippman worked for Jane Mathews on the "Dining with Jane" and "Shopping with Jane" columns for the New Canaan Advertiser.

From the late 1960s until 1999, Tippman worked for the Hicks and Sturgis law firm and later Attorney Ira Hicks.

Upon retirement, she returned to school to get her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Marymount Manhattan in New York City. She was active in the New Canaan Congregational Church, where she served as a deacon for many years.

Tippman received her pilot's license in 1945. She was active in the Fezziwig Society and served as secretary of the New Canaan Cemetery Association. She enjoyed travel and reading.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald, and a daughter, Patricia Hayes. She is survived by a son, Don C. (Eve Zibart) Tippman, of Washington Grove, Md.; a son-law, Richard Hayes, of Honolulu; a niece and a nephew.

Services and interment will be private. Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan is handling arrangements.
