Anthony Francis D'Andrea, 89, Stamford Native

NORWALK, Conn. -- Anthony Francis D’Andrea died Friday, Aug. 28, after a brief illness. He was 89.

Born in Stamford on Feb. 18, 1926, he was the son of Anthony J. and Assunta (Suzie) Rosati-D’Andrea. 

D’Andrea graduated from Stamford High School in 1944. He then joined the U.S. Navy, serving with distinction in the Pacific theater and participating in many battles, including MacArthur’s triumphant return to the Philippines during the battle of the Leyte Gulf. 

After the war, he began working at Electrical Sales and Service in Greenwich and eventually became the owner operator of the business. After selling his business he worked for P. Sabini and Co. until his retirement. 

It was through his love of singing and the theater that he met his wife, Peggy, when they were performing in a production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” in Greenwich. They married in 1957 and settled in Norwalk where they raised their four children. 

He was a member of many community groups and very active in St. Mary’s Parish, where he was a member of the choir for more than 30 years. He was a member of the regional vocal group Yankee Male Chorus and toured with the group throughout New England. He was an avid bowler and was a member of the St. Martin’s Club with his childhood friends from the west side of Stamford. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth M. D’Andrea; his children, Anthony G. D’Andrea and his wife, Karen, Mark D’Andrea and his wife, Joann, Jeffry D’Andrea and his wife, Eileen; his daughter, Mary Calabrese; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Jake Calabrese, Maggie D’Andrea and Anthony M. D’Andrea, all of Norwalk; and two sisters, Carmella Pavia and Marylou Dulemba, of Stamford. 

He was predeceased by his brother Rocco D’Andrea. 

Visitation is Friday, Sept. 4, from 5-8 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Ave., Norwalk. 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Notre Dame Convalescent Home, 76 West Rocks Road, Norwalk, CT 06851, or Norwalk Boy Scout Troop 19.
