The attack occurred just before noon in the area of Gay and Broad streets, police said. Two men were walking nearby and turned toward the woman, with one grabbing the purse and the second acting as a lookout, police said.

The woman struggled, but lost the purse to the two men, who fled into the nearby Bedford Street Parking Garage, police said. The purse was found nearby at 50 Forest St., but its contents were gone, police said.

A number of robberies involving purses being grabbed have been reported, Stamford police Lt. Diedrich Hohn said, including one a couple of weeks ago on Bedford Street not far from the police station in which an elderly woman was robbed of her purse.

In that case, Hohn said police are making progress, but no arrests have been made yet.
