Stamford will receive $338,000 from the Department of Justice, which it will match dollar-for-dollar, giving the Stamford program $676,000 for cameras, the Mayor said.
The City of Stamford was awarded this grant after applying to the Body-Worn Camera Pilot Implementation Program announced by the Department of Justice in May. The program is part of President Barack Obama’s push to buy 50,000 cameras for law enforcement over a three-year period.
“We hope to have the cameras in use in our police department by early next year. Careful implementation of this program is going to be key so that no one’s rights are being infringed upon. I look forward to working with Chief Jon Fontneau and Director Ted Jankowski on this important initiative," Martin said.
The city is one of three in Connecticut awarded the grant.
The grant will allow the Stamford Police Department to improve public and police officer safety, "reducing crime and improving public trust" between the department and the citizens it serves, said Ted Jankowski, Director of Public Safety and welfare.
The BWC Pilot Implementation Program was created in May to respond to immediate needs of local law enforcement organizations.
