Stamford's Yerwood Center Faces Financial, Leadership Crisis

STAMFORD, Conn. -- The future of the Yerwood Center in Stamford is uncertain after the executive director was fired and its staff went more than three months without paychecks, the Stamford Advocate reported.

The Yerwood Center, a community center that offers after-school programs on Stamford's West Side, cannot pay its bills without city help and is in danger of having to suspend operations, said Fernando Luis Alvarez, interim director and chairman of the board. He is seeking to raise funds in the community to support the center, which was founded in 1937.
