Stamford's Smith House Faces Financial Problems As Losses Mount

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Smith House, one of only two city-run nursing homes in Connecticut has been a fixture in Stamford for more than 50 years, but rising costs have put it in financial peril, according to WSHU.org.

Smith House's shortfall has ballooned in recent years, according to WSHU. In just seven years, Stamford taxpayers have gone from picking up an $850,000 tab for the nursing home to now paying $2.7 million, WSHU said.

To close the gap, the city is now looking for concessions on health benefits for employees, WSHU reported.

Some of Smith House's financial woes are the result of changes in medicaid reimbursement. Since nearly 80 percent of the home's residents are medicaid patients, the problem is magnified, according to WSHU.
