Stamford Woman Dies After Being Hit By SUV

Updated: STAMFORD, Conn. -- A 58-year-old city woman has died after she was struck and pinned by an SUV while she was crossing a street in downtown Stamford on Monday, police said.

A woman is dead after a Chevrolet Tahoe collided with her while she was walking in the area of the Hoyt and Summer Street intersection Monday afternoon.

Janice Pielert was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital, where she was taken after the accident, police said.

Pielert was struck at 12:42 p.m. Monday in the area of the intersection of Summer and Hoyt streets downtown. She was hit by a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Natalie Gainer, 59, of Norwalk.

The vehicle was traveling in the left lane of southbound Summer Street, and Gainer made a left turn on to Hoyt Street, police said. Gainer was taken to Stamford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the accident, police said.

Pielert was trapped underneath the Tahoe and had to be extricated by Stamford firefighters.

The investigation into the crash is continuing, police said. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to contact the investigating officers, Hugh Mullin or Ryan McAllister, at 203-977-4712.

The last firefighters left the scene at about 3 p.m. Monday.

Miscellaneous items, including what appeared to be a purse, were on the street near the Tahoe as police worked to reconstruct the accident scene.
