STAMFORD, Conn. The United Way of Western Connecticut and Volunteer Center of Southwestern Fairfield County announced the merger Wednesday of the two organizations to increase volunteer efforts in the region.
The July 1 merger will increase the United Ways ability to mobilize volunteer efforts and to enhance and expand the services the Volunteer Center currently offers, the release said.
There are not enough dollars in the community to solve its problems, Kim Morgan, the interim chief executive officer for the United Way of Western Connecticut, said of the need for more volunteers.
This is one small step for the Volunteer Center and one giant leap for volunteerism, said Rich Colbert, board chairman of the Volunteer Center of Southwestern Fairfield Connecticut.
The initial inquiries into the merger were made in January 2010, but the time was not right for the Volunteer Center, Colbert said. Talks started up again this past August or September, he said.
Brooke Feder, chairman of the board for the United Way of Western Connecticut, said both organizations have similar goals and have been a synergy between them.
