“Scalzi Park has been a crown jewel, but over the years has been tarnished,” Randall Skigen, president of the Board of Representatives, said in celebrating the new shine on the park.
Skigen said he hopes to keep the park as the center of recreation in Stamford by eventually building trails that will run from the park to Long Island Sound and from the park to the New York border.
The renovations, which include new lighting, repaved roads and walkways, a splash pad in the playground and many other upgrades, were part of a plan made 11 years ago, Mayor Michael Pavia said during the ceremony. The improvements will keep the third largest and most used park in the city in good shape for decades, he added.
“You will see hundreds and hundreds of people using it,” the mayor said. His claim was supported by the crowds of people using the tennis courts, playground, and baseball field Tuesday despite the muggy weather.
The work was done in two phases, beginning in 2011. The first phase included adding the walkway and renovating the playground. The second phase included resurfacing the roadways and parking lots. All of the work was done around the recreational season when the public uses Scalzi the most.
The next parks to be upgraded will be Rosa Hartman, Phase III of Scalzi, the closing of Scofieldtown Landfill, and the master plan upgrades for Cummings and West beaches, City Engineer Lou Casolo said.
