"For the future we are going to be full swing [Wednesday]. We are going to be picking up garbage and recycling. Everything is delayed by one day," Mayor David Martin said Tuesday.

He praised the work of city employees for their work and for city residents who helped by staying off the roads and highways while plowing was underway.

About a half-foot of blowing snow had to be cleared -- still a fair amount but well below the 2 feet predicted in the forecast.

"I say hats off hats off to the highway department, the solid waste guys and parks and facilities who all pitched in and hats off to the Stamford residents who kept off the streets," Martin said while touring the city's highway garage. "We had only a dozen minor accidents and only one that had any injuries at all. No major outages of power. We are in good shape here."

The overnight plowing work was relatively easy for city workers, who were expecting the "big one," a senior highway official said.

"We didn't have any major issues to report," said Thomas Turk, traffic and road maintenance supervisor for the city.
