City ordinances say that sidewalks must be cleared within 12 hours after the end of snowfall. Local property owners bear the responsibility for clearing sidewalks abutting their property and making them safe for pedestrians. The city has received reports that sidewalks in highly trafficked areas have not yet been cleared, officials said.

“Many residents depend on our sidewalks for travel, including school children and seniors, and clearing them for safe passage is critical to public safety," Mayor David Martin said. "We are again asking for residents and businesses to do their part by clearing snow from the sidewalks near their home or business."

Civil citation officers, if necessary, will be deployed to examine problem areas and remind residents to clear their sidewalks. If sidewalks remain uncleared, a fine may be levied.

Residents may contact Citizen’s Service at 203-977-4140 with questions.
