"It is clearly going to be a dangerous storm," Mayor David Martin said during a press conference Monday morning at the Stamford Government Center. "There is no such thing as being overprepared for this storm."
The city's parking garages at Bell, Summer and Bedford Streets will be open for residents to park their vehicles for free during the blast of snow.
No vehicles can be parked on designated snow routes; the cars must be removed to aid in snow-removal efforts. Martin also recommended that residents remove all vehicles from city streets even if they are not on designated snow routes in order to help snow plow drivers do their jobs.
"We have more miles of local road than any other city in Connecticut," Martin said.
Cars remaining on Snow Emergency Routes will be ticketed and towed beginning 6 p.m. Monday. A list of snow emergency route can be found online at the city's website.
The city's hurricane barrier has been closed in Stamford Harbor, and all nonessential city meetings have been canceled.
"Even after the storm passes, it will take some time to dig out," Martin said. "I urge everyone to have extreme caution and patience."
Martin said he didn't know how much it would cost but said the city's priority is to get the snow removed and to protect its residents.
A Blizzard Warning remains in effect until midnight Tuesday. Gov. Dannel Malloy has declared a State of Emergency and has banned travel on all roads beginning at 9 p.m. Monday.
All Fire Stations and the Government Center will be used as warming centers. Stamford Public Schools will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 27.
To report problems such as downed trees, etc., the Citizens Service Center will be open for calls at 203-977-4140. For emergencies, call 911 and for nonemergency weather related issues call 203-977-4444.
Tuesday garbage and recycling pickup has been canceled. Those with garbage and recycling pickup on Tuesday and Wednesday should check www.StamfordCT.gov for updates and take garbage and recycling bins off the roadway to keep them clear for plows.
