Stamford Police: Woman Kills Mother, Shoots Self

STAMFORD, Conn. — A woman may have shot her elderly mother and then killed herself at a home on Long Ridge Road in Stamford, police Capt. Richard Conklin said.

Police discovered the bodies Friday afternoon in a home at 1214 Long Ridge Road after receiving a call from a neighbor who had not seen the women for two days. The neighbor had been helping the women with money and food after they had fallen on hard times, Conklin said.

The deaths occurred within the last 48 hours, Conklin said.

The daughter, Susan Beran, was 57 and the mother, Florence Beran was 85. Conklin said they owed about $50,000 in taxes and the home had been sold in a tax sale about two weeks ago.

The grass in front of the home Friday afternoon was overgrown, coming up to the knees of investigators in the front yard. The paint on the wooden porch was chipped. The power in the home had been turned off for some time, and documents were scattered around inside, Conklin said.

When police arrived, the doors and windows on the first floor were locked. Police climbed a ladder to get into a second floor window.

Four dogs in the home appeared well cared for and were taken by animal control, Conklin said.

The elderly woman's husband and father of the younger woman had died previously. Several of his guns were still in the home Friday before being confiscated by police, Conklin said.

Neighbors had not reported hearing gunshots, Conklin said.
