Stamford Opens Warming Centers As Big Chill Settles In

STAMFORD, Conn. -- As winter finally set in with snow Tuesday and with colder temperatures arriving with it, Stamford officials are advising residents to take precautions to ensure their safety in the next few days of bitter cold.

A total of 1.7 inches of snow fell Tuesday in Stamford, according to the National Weather Service.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Tuesday announced he has activated the State’s Severe Cold Weather Protocol in anticipation of temperatures in the teens and single-digits and wind chills below zero over the next few days and nights, effective through Saturday.

A dozen community facilities will be open to provide people a place to be warm, Stamford announced Tuesday.

“The city of Stamford will do all that it can to ensure that its most vulnerable residents have a place to stay warm and safe," Mayor David Martin said. " We are proud to be partnering with community agencies to provide warming centers for residents, and for the first time, the city of Stamford is providing an overnight warming center in partnership with Inspirica.”

Inspirica, a Stamford-based provider of services to the homeless, will provide an overnight warming center from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. the next morning at 8 Woodland Place.

The following warming centers are open for the times and locations listed:

• Glenbrook Community Center, 35 Crescent St., weekdays, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

• Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd., 1st floor lobby, weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

• Jewish Community Center, 1035 Newfield Ave., Monday to Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

• Central Fire Headquarters, 629 Main St., 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• South End Fire Station, 215 Washington Blvd., 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• West Side Fire Station, 80 Fairfield Ave., 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• East Side/Shippan Fire Station, 364 Shippan Ave., 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Woodside Fire Station, 1600 Washington Blvd, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Belltown Fire Station, 8 Dorlen Road, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Long Ridge Fire Station, 366 Long Ridge Road, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Springdale Fire Station, 987 Hope St., 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Turn of River Fire Station, 268 Turn of River Road, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
