Stamford Opens Cooling Centers To Help Beat The Heat

STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford will open designated cooling centers over the next couple of days to help residents deal with the extreme heat that is expected.

The city has opened up cooling centers at the Stamford Government Center and Stamford Fire Headquarters to help people stay out of the extreme heat over the next few days.

The Stamford Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd., and Stamford Fire Headquarters, 629 Main St., will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday for the public to beat the heat, a statement from the city said.

Residents are warn not to over-exert themselves in the 90-degree heat. If you experience signs of heat stroke, go to the emergency room. The signs are:

? Body temperature greater than or equal to 105 degrees.

? Skin that is hot and dry with red spots.

? Mental confusion.

? Loss of consciousness

? Convulsions

People should also take these steps to avoid heat stroke:

? Drink more fluids, that are non-alchoholic, have no or little sugar, and no caffeine, even if you are not thirsty or not outside.

? Have the phone number of your family doctor handy.

? Stay indoors, in air conditioning. Electric fans will help. Also, taking a cool bath or shower is suggested.

? Never leave a person or animal in a parked car.
