Stamford Opens Up Cooling Centers During Extreme Heat

STAMFORD, Conn. — With extreme heat expected over the next few days the City of Stamford has opened several cooling centers in the city to keep residents safe.

The Stamford Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd., and Stamford Fire Headquarters, 629 Main St., will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

People should take the following precautions to avoid heat stroke, according to the release:

? Have your doctor’s phone number by your phone and stored in your cellphone.

? Drink more fluids, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid beverages with caffeine, alcohol, and a lot of sugar.

? Stay indoors in air conditioning.

? Wear lightweight, light colored, loose fitting clothes.

? Don’t leave pets or people in parked cars.

? Check on people who are of high risk of getting heat stroke – senior citizens, children, and people who are mentally or physical ill.

? Limit your time outdoors to the early morning or evening hours, and rest in shady areas.

? Wear sun screen, hats, and sunglasses.

The signs of heat stroke are:

? Body temperature greater than or equal to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

? Skin that is hot and dry with red spots.

? Mental confusion.

? Loss of consciousness

? Convulsions
