Stamford Memorial Day Parade To Prelude Dedication

STAMFORD, Conn. — After Sunday’s Memorial Day parade, Stamford will honor its own Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Homer L. Wise with a dedication ceremony of his bronze statue in Veterans Park.

Keynote speaker for the ceremony will be Paul W. Bucha, a medal of honor recipient from Vietnam in March 1968, the Sgt. Homer L. Wise website said. He is also a West Point graduate and former president of the Medal of Honor Society.

The master of ceremonies will be former CBS and ABC news anchor and correspondent Morton Dean, the website said. Dean’s assignments included covering the Vietnam War and other wars around the world.

Wise, a Stamford resident, served during World War II. In addition to receiving the Medal of Honor, he also earned the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts and 10 other decorations, making him one of the most decorated soldiers ever, the website said. The statue was erected Dec. 18, created out of bronze by sculptor Janice Mauro.

The parade will start at noon Sunday at Hoyt and Summer streets. It make its way to Veterans Park, where the ceremony will take place. The ceremony should begin at about 1 p.m.
