Cesar Martinez, 29, of Greyrock Place, said he was trying to protect his girlfriend, 23-year-old Brenda Hernandez, from further injuring herself after she kicked out the rear window of a friend’s car after they began arguing as they were driving back from a Port Chester, N.Y., bar early on April 8, 2013, according to the report.

According to police, Martinez said he and Hernandez had been fighting and he held her by her wrists, with her chin inside the crook of his right elbow. Police spotted two men pushing a Honda SUV northbound on the Connecticut Turnpike in Fairfield, where they found Hernandez lying in the backseat, not breathing.

Martinez was arraigned on a charge of first-degree manslaughter in connection with her death on Nov. 24 in State Superior Court in Bridgeport. Bond was set at $250,000.
