Stamford Hotspots To Require Beach Permits Soon

Ed Shura spent his Thursday afternoon in one of his favorite places — Cove Island Park in Stamford — reading and enjoying the sun and warm breeze.

“The Cove has the track to walk on, and everything is nice and green,” Shura said.

After being cooped up all winter, Shirley Zayas was happy to get outdoors and soak up the sun during her afternoon jog. She said she enjoys the Cove because she wants to “get all of that good Vitamin D” in the sunshine.

However, anyone who wants to enjoy Stamford’s beaches after Memorial Day will need to purchase a parking permit. Though Zayas was unsure of when she would get one, Shura planned to head to the Cashiering and Permitting Division of the Government Center on Friday.

Beach permits are $20 for Stamford residents whose cars are registered in the city. The cost is $95 for residents whose vehicles are not registered in Stamford. A senior citizen or resident on Social Security with a car registered in Stamford pay $7 for a permit, $35 if the car is registered elsewhere. Beach stickers can be purchased only with a current and valid car registration, the city’s website says.

A permit is needed for Cove Island, Cummings, West Beach, Southfield and Dorothy Heroy Parks from May 30 through Sept. 5. The Cashiering and Permitting Division will sell seasonal stickers until June 23.

Daily passes are also available at Cove Island Park, Cummings Park and West Beach. Seasonal weekday passes are $225 for non-Stamford residents.

For additional information about obtaining a beach sticker, visit the Cashiering and Permitting Divisions page on the city’s website.
