STAMFORD, Conn. ? Lower Fairfield County residents in need who don't eat meat will be able to get a Thanksgiving "tofurkey” instead from the Stamford-based Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County.
PETA donated 20 of the vegan turkeys after the food bank put out an urgent call for food after Hurricane Sandy, a release from PETA said. The food bank, which serves Greenwich, Stamford, New Canaan, Darien, Norwalk and Wilton, had to dip into its holiday supply to help people storm victims, the release said.
"Thanksgiving is a great time to remember all living beings and give everyone, human and nonhuman alike, something to be thankful for," PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk said in the release. "Delicious, healthy vegan foods offer hungry humans an alternative to foods that come from violence."
“Tofurkey” is made from plant proteins and spices and does not have the cholesterol found in turkey meat, the release said.
PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is the largest animal rights organization in the world and works to end cruelty to animals, its website said.
