Stamford Follows Cold-Weather Protocols, Offers Shelters, Warming Centers

STAMFORD, CONN. -- The subzero temperatures that will set teeth chattering throughout the region for the next several days has prompted Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to activate the state’s “severe weather protocol.”

It's time to bundle up — temperatures will drop below zero this weekend. Connecticut has activated its cold-weather protocols and local communities are offering shelters and warming centers to help keep vulnerable populations safe.

The protocol, now in effect, will remain active through 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 15.

Most importantly, Malloy said, it directs various emergency departments to coordinate with 2-1-1 and the state’s network of shelters to ensure that vulnerable populations, such as the homeless and elderly, are safe and warm.

"The next few days will certainly be the coldest we have seen so far this winter season, and could be among the coldest nights in terms of wind chill that our state has experienced in several years," Malloy said.

Anyone in need of shelter or a warming center can call 2-1-1 to find their locations, the governor said.

The following warming centers are open in Stamford:

  • Chester Addison Community Center, 245 Selleck St., Monday through Friday (9 a.m. - 6 p.m.) CLOSED Monday, Feb. 15;
  • Stamford Family YMCA, 10 Bell St., Monday - Friday (9 a.m. - 6 p.m.), Saturday (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.), Sunday (11 a.m. - 4 p.m.);

Malloy’s office urged residents to take precautions to stay safe, including dressing warmly and in layers, preparing their cars for extreme weather conditions and checking emergency kits, taking care of pets, and checking on elderly neighbors.
