STAMFORD, Conn. -- The city will conduct “active monitoring” three times a day on any person who has traveled from Liberia, Guinea or Sierra Leone and entered the city, the Stamford Department of Health and Social Services announced.

The aim is to be proactive in the face of the potential threat of the deadly Ebola virus.

“Our aim is to be able to quickly identify individuals with any symptoms so they can access medical intervention as early as possible and to stop the spread of disease in the community,” Anne Fountain, the city's director of health and social services, said in a statement.

There hasn't been a single case of Ebola in Connecticut, but towns and cities across the state are prepared just in case. Gov. Dannel Malloy issued a declaration of public health emergency on Oct. 7, authorizing the isolation of those who are sick or a quarantine for those who have had contact with the potential patient.

In addition, travelers from West Africa will be given a CARE (Check and Report Ebola) kit once they arrive at American airports. The kit includes a tracking log, contact numbers of state health departments, information on Ebola and a thermometer to monitor for fever. Also, they will be asked to carry out a self-check for fever and other symptoms two or three times a day.

Since the first documented case of Ebola on American soil weeks ago, Stamford Mayor David Martin has held frequent meetings with the Health Department, the emergency management director, police and fire departments, Stamford EMS and Stamford Hospital.

“We are focused on maintaining the safety of our residents and health care workers and ensuring that all potentially exposed individuals are cared for properly,” Martin said in the statement.
