Romney Can Help the Nation, Wife Says in Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — On the eve of the Republican presidential primary in Connecticut, front-runner Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann Romney, arrived in Stamford to rally supporters behind her husband.

She cited her husband’s ability to solve problems — as he did by turning around the financially troubled 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah and resolving the budget deficit as governor of Massachusetts without raising taxes or borrowing money. That is why citizens should vote for her husband this November over President Barack Obama, Ann Romney said as the keynote speaker at the annual Prescott Bush Awards Dinner on Monday night.

Romney excelled not only at handling tough public situations but also private problems, she said. Romney told the crowd of her husband's support when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and breast cancer.

“If you can fix it, you must do this,” Romney told her husband as he considered another run for the presidency this year.

That was the advice he ultimately followed. It was not an easy decision for Mitt or the family on whether he should run again, she said. But for her, what she ultimately believes is that her husband can fix the country's problems, she said.

“We are equal partners today in everything we do,” Romney said of her relationship with her husband.

More than 800 people filled the Stamford Marriott’s ballroom, including Senate candidate Chris Shays, state Senate Minority Leader John McKinney of Fairfield and former gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley. The dinner is held annually by the state’s Republican Party. It is named for U.S. Sen. Prescott Bush of Greenwich, the father of President George H.W. Bush and grandfather of President George W. Bush.

This is the Romney campaign’s second stop in Stamford. The candidate also spoke at the Marriott Hotel back in March.
