The gift will support the emergency response and global health organization’s efforts to contain the outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, which has infected more than 18,000 people and killed nearly 7,000.
AmeriCares' Ebola response aims to expand treatment capacity, reduce transmission, restore access to essential health services and improve safety practices in health care facilities.
“Increasing access to medicine is an extension of Novo Nordisk’s Triple Bottom Line, in which we continually work towards financial, social, and environmental responsibility,” said Curt Oltmans, corporate vice president and general counsel of Novo Nordisk. “We are pleased to partner with AmeriCares to put those beliefs in action.”
Novo Nordisk has been supporting AmeriCares with donations of medicine since 2005. Over the years, AmeriCares has distributed Novo Nordisk products to 21 countries, including the United States, where the company consistently donates insulin for diabetic patients forced to evacuate their homes due to tornadoes, hurricanes and other emergencies.
AmeriCares has been actively responding to the Ebola crisis in West Africa since the spring, providing critical safety equipment to protect frontline health workers and medical aid to treat Ebola patients. To date, AmeriCares has delivered 19 aid shipments to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. An AmeriCares emergency response team has been in Liberia since September working with health officials on containment strategies and supplying three new Ebola treatment units with medicines and protective gear. AmeriCares is also recruiting medical professionals from the United States and abroad to staff one of the new treatment centers in Liberia.
In the months ahead, AmeriCares plans to provide community outreach, training for local health workers and other support to make the new Ebola treatment center in Grand Bassa County, Liberia. AmeriCares will work in West Africa until the outbreak is stopped.
