Norwalk Woman Gets 30 Months In Prison For Embezzling From Stamford Dentist

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A former Norwalk resident was sentenced to 30 months in prison for embezzling more than $100,000 from her employer, a Stamford dental practice, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office.

Barbara O’Hara-Leone, 53, was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant in Hartford. She will also serve three years of supervised release.

According to court documents, from about June 2012 to May 2013, O’Hara-Leone stole insurance checks issued to the practice and deposited them into her personal bank account. She worked as an office manager for the dental practice.

In addition, she submitted fraudulent claims to several insurance companies for work that was never completed in the names of existing patients, and kept the money, according to the press release.

As part of those fraudulent claims, O’Hara-Leone used names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers of the victim’s patients. During the course of the scheme, she stole more than $100,000, the statement said.

O’Hara-Leone was ordered to pay restitution of $100,979.89, the statement said. She has been detained since her arrest in North Carolina on April 23 and pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud Oct. 4, according to the statement.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas P. Morabito.
