Nor'Easter Brings Sleet, Flood Warning To Stamford

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Coastal Fairfield County is not out of the woods in the nor'easter even though the snow was slowing and turning to sleet at midday Thursday.

The National Weather Service added a Coastal Flood Statement to its Winter Storm Warning for the shoreline of Fairfield County. It will last from 5 p.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Friday as the tide comes in. The winter storm warning is expected to last through 6 a.m. Friday.

The high tide could be 2 to 2.5 feet above normal Thursday afternoon and evening. This could lead to localized flooding, especially along the most vulnerable shore roads. Waves and tide could splash over and basements could also be flooded.

Sleet and freezing rain will replace the snow for a short time along the coast Thursday afternoon before heavy snow returns in the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow is still expected to accumulate from 10 to 14 inches throughout the region with winds from 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

By 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service was reporting the follow unofficial snow totals:

Darien: 13 inches
New Canaan: 12.8 inches
Norwalk: 12 inches
Greenwich: 11 inches
Stamford: 8 inches
Danbury: 7.1 inches
Weston: 7 inches

Drivers are still being warned to stay off of roads on Thursday.
