The bear strolled on the porch and eventually wandered away into the woods, but caused no problems, Dave Freedman told the Advocate.

Residents are asked to report sightings at 860-424-3011 or by clicking here, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said.

Only four bear sightings in New Canaan have been reported to the state in the past 12 months. But more and more bear are being spotted with their population on the rise across Connecticut, DEEP said.

To deter bears, residents should birdfeeders, place garbage cans inside a garage or shed and clean and store grills. Don't feed bears or approach them, DEEP said.
