Nature Center Event Leads Off Stamford's Weekend

STAMFORD, Conn. — Hey Stamford, looking for something to do this weekend? Here are a few events to check out.

Friday, Feb. 3

? 5 p.m. The New Canaan YMCA is holding the Whirlwind Diving Invitational. It continues all weekend with 8 a.m. start times on Saturday and Sunday as well. The Y is located at 564 South Ave., New Canaan.

? 6 p.m. Chris Evers, director of Animal Embassy, will bring several of his wild animal friends to the Stamford Museum & Nature Center for “South American Adventure.” There will be presentations from 6 to 6:45 p.m. for ages 3 to 6 and from 7 to 8 p.m. for older children. The price is $5 for members, $8 for non-members. The museum is located at 39 Scofieldtown Road, Stamford.

? 7 p.m. Not an animal fan? That's all right. The Stamford Museum & Nature Center also has Astrology Night Friday, with “Winter Constellations” and a chance to scan the night sky through the museum’s 22-inch telescope. Members can attend free. Tickets are $3 for non-member adults, $2 for non-member kids. The program is not suitable for kids under 5.

? 7 p.m. Help the Stamford High School ice hockey team by attending “Knight of Laughs” at the Italian Center. For ticket information, contact the Italian Center, 1620 Newfield Ave., Stamford.

Saturday, Feb. 4

? 8:30 a.m. Get in touch with your inner self at “Spa for the Spirit” at the Church of Christ the Healer. There is a suggested donation of $15 to $20 for the half-day retreat. The church is located at 20 Brookdale Place, and all denominations are welcome.

? 10 a.m. Trace your roots at the Stamford Historical Society’s “Looking for More Uncles than Sam? Learn How to Find Them at the Genealogy Research Roundtable.” The free event will help both the novice and expert family historians continue their research. The historical society is located at 1508 High Ridge Road, Stamford.

? 11 a.m. Watch Oscar-nominated films every Saturday and Sunday in February during the Avon Theater’s “Red Carpet Film Festival.” The festival kicks off Saturday with “The Beginning.” Select short films will be played throughout the month. A full list can be found online . Film festival badges are $35 for members, $70 non-members. The Avon Theater is at 272 Bedford St. in Stamford. A gala will take place Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Sunday, Feb. 5

? 10 a.m. Stop by to have your cheek swabbed and possibly save lives during Justin Wexler’s Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive at the Jewish Community Center. Justin is registering donors for his Mitzvah Project. The JCC is located at 1035 Newfield Ave., Stamford.

? 4 p.m. Kick off the celebration for Sunday's big game at “Forties, Fifties & Football: A Super Bowl Tailgate for Jewish Forties and Fifties Singles.” The pregame tailgate will be at the Butterfield 8 Lounge, 112 Bedford St., Stamford. Tickets are $18 in advance, $25 at the door.
