Recently re-elected state Sen. Andrew McDonald, a Stamford native, has accepted an appointment from his longtime friend and colleague, Gov.-elect Dan Malloy to join the new Democratic administration in Hartford as general counsel.
"I'm honored to have Dan Malloy as my client, again," McDonald said Thursday to an overflow crowd of friends and supporters in the lobby of the Government Center. "Dan and I have been friends for more than 18 years so this is an easy choice for me."
In addition to McDonald's appointment, Malloy named Roy Occhiogrosso, his campaign strategist and close friend, as strategy and communications director for the new administration.
"Along with Tim Bannon as chief of staff, I now have my closest advisers on board to help me make the hard decisions we face in Connecticut in the future," Malloy said.
McDonald was recently re-elected to his fifth term in the Connecticut State Senate, representing the 27th District in Stamford and Darien. At this time, no date has been set for a special election to replace McDonald, a Democrat. He defeated Bob Kolenberg, a Republican member of the city's Board of Finance, in the November election.
McDonald served many years as a corporation counsel in Stamford when Malloy was mayor. McDonald is a litigation partner with the Stamford-based law firm, Pullman and Comley.
Malloy will be sworn in as governor on Jan. 5.
