Previous report:

At least 50 people were killed and more than 400 injured when a gunman opened fire at a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip late Sunday night, making it the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The gunman who was firing from a window on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel with a high-powered weapon was found dead. He's been identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada.

A cache of 10 rifles was found in Paddock's hotel room, in which he was reportedly staying since Thursday, Sept. 28.

Police say a female companion of Paddock's has been located out of the country and is not believed to be involved in the incident at this time.

Singer Jason Aldean, the country music entertainer of the year, was in the middle of a set when shots rang out at around 1 a.m. Eastern time.

A crowd estimated at more than 22,000 was attending the event.

The death count had initially been reported as 20 before increasing to 50 at a police briefing early Monday morning.
