Stamford High Administrators Under Fire Tops Week's News

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Here's a look at the top stories from last week across Fairfield County.

  • Stamford School Superintendent Winfred Hamilton is seeking to fire Stamford High Principal Donna Valentine as well as Vice Principals Roth Nordin and Angela Thomas Graves after a scandal involving a female teacher who had a sexual relationship with a male student throughout the 2013-14 school year. 

  • Michelle Crawford, a 33-year-old Greenwich resident, pleaded guilty to embezzling over $176,000 from her employer, the New England Oil Co., and now faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. 
  • Michael Trombetta, a 27-year-old Norwalk man, was arrested after police said he tried to escape from Norwalk Hospital and then proceeded to shout racial slurs and profanity at staff.
  • The president of Temple Israel in Westport called it extremely disturbing but said "fortunately, no one was in danger" when two unarmed men attempted to disrupt a luncheon Tuesday for Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. Westport police arrested Daniel Fischer, 25, and Gregory Williams, 25, both of New Haven. Each was charged with first-degree criminal trespass and second-degree breach of peace. During the disturbance, Coleytown Middle School, Coleytown Elementary School, the preschool at the Unitarian Church and the Temple Israel nursery were put into lockdown.
  • Several Fairfield County high schools were ranked among the best in Connecticut by U.S. News & World Report, including Weston High at No. 5, Staples at No. 7, Darien at No. 8, Wilton at No. 9, Ridgefield at No. 11, Joel Barlow at No. 13, Greenwich at No. 14, New Canaan at No. 15, Fairfield Ludlowe at No. 24, at Fairfield Warde at No. 30, Westhill at No. 32, Brien McMahon at No. 41 and the Academy of Information Technology & Engineering in Stamford at No. 43. 
  • Darien's Rob and Kit Rohn and their children, Nick and Katie, were among the honorees at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk’s annual fundraising gala, which raised a record $800,000 to support the aquarium’s environmental education programming. The family was given a Red Apple Award for their contributions to the aquarium and the environment.
  • The historic Dana House in New Canaan and its 9 surrounding acres have been sold in three separate transactions that will allow two new custom homes to be built. The price tag was $5.09 million. 
  • Stamford Assistant Police Chief Timothy Shaw will be trading his beat in the big city for more rural surroundings when he becomes chief of the Easton Police Department in July. 
  • A new National Park Service report shows that a record 34,083 people visited Weir Farm National Historic Site in Ridgefield and Wilton in 2014.
