Almost 800 people came from all over the East Coast to participate in the event, which was organized by the National Conference of Synagogue Youth. The group set up 1,000 Menorahs, which were lit simultaneously to break the record, according to a news release.
“It was a magical and memorable moment, which demonstrated that the miracle of Chanukah is not an ancient one, but rather one that occurs and reveals itself in our generation as well,” Carol Rhine, chief operating officer of the New York chapter of the organization, said adding that how all the people came together was more impressive than the record. The idea to try to break the record came in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the thought that this year’s Menorah lighting should be more special, the release said.
“As the events of the last several weeks left so many in a state of both physical and spiritual darkness, the holiday of Chanukah, also known as the festival of lights, fortuitously provided an opportunity to ‘turn the lights back on’ for all the individuals and families affected by the storm,” Rabbi Aryeh Lightstone, spiritual director for the New York chapter of the organization, said in the release.
