Groundhog Sees Shadow As Snow Returns To Forecast For Stamford

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- On Sunday morning, Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow in Pennsylvania as did Connecticut's Chuckles in Manchester, predicting six more weeks of winter. And Fairfield County residents may be experiencing some of that winter weather as soon as tonight.

The National Weather Service says there is a chance of showers after 3 p.m., with a high of 48 degrees. But tonight could bring snow and sleet as temperatures fall into the 20s across Fairfield County.

Snow is likely Monday, mainly between 8 a.m. and noon, with 3 to 5 inches of accumulation possible, the National Weather Service said.

More snow and sleet is likely by 9 p.m. Tuesday evening, with snow and freezing rain likely throughout Wednesday.

The Pennsylvania groundhog emerged from his dwelling at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, a town that has been carrying on the tradition of Groundhog Day since 1887, according to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

Ever since the tradition began, Phil (and his ancestors) have seen their shadows 100 times, while predicting an early spring only 16 times. There was no record for nine of the years.
