John Louizos, a lawyer in Stamford who is also the city's Board of Finance chairman, said the meeting will discuss issues occurring in Greece, where the country has been struggling economically for years, and of religious freedom, especially with concern to Greeks in Turkey and Greek Orthodox issues in Muslim Turkey.

"We're going to talk about the Greek economy, Cyprus, religious freedom, Turkey and issues such as the discovery of natural gas," he said. Natural gas has been discovered in the eastern Mediterranean that is being claimed by many countries including Greece.

In addition to Murphy, Mayor David Martin will attend as will Andrew Manatos, an assistant Secretary of Commerce in the Carter administration and Aravella Simotas, who represents New York's 36th Assembly District, in Astoria, Queens.

Doors open at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Archangels at 1527 Bedford St.  There will be food and refreshments.

The meeting is presented by the Archangels Greek Orthodox Church and the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Newfield Avenue. Other sponsors are the American Hellenic Education Progressive Association and the Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate whose mission is to defend and support the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, in Istanbul, Turkey, the spiritual center of the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians.
