Former UN Official Dies In Weightlifting Accident At Westchester Home

The former president of the United Nations General Assembly, John Ashe, died in a weightlifting accident at his Westchester home, officials said Thursday.

The 61-year-old Dobbs Ferry resident, who was awaiting trial on fraud charges, died after dropping a barbell on his neck while weightlifting, according to the New York Daily News.

The cause of death was ruled to be “traumatic asphyxia" with "laryngeal cartilage fractures," according to the report.

As previously reported at Daily Voice, Ashe, a diplomat from Antigua, was arrested in October as part of an investigation into a corruption scheme.

He served as the president of the General Assembly from September 2013 to September 2014, was one of six people accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars from Chinese sources.
