Girl Scouts of Connecticut has teamed with prominent businesswomen across the state to form a STEM Advisory Committee with the aim of improving the future of STEM programming for Girl Scouts in the state.

The committee met recently and discussed the competencies, which are the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors girls need in order to be prepared for and succeed in today’s STEM business world.

Several topics, such as critical thinking and problem solving, independence and the willingness to take risks, good communication skills, decision making skills, a passion to learn and a competitive spirit, were discussed.

“At Girl Scouts of Connecticut, we strive to make experiential learning fun by offering programming in robotics, rocketry, coding, financial literacy, and more,” said Mary Barneby, CEO at Girl Scouts of Connecticut. “This committee will help us further focus our STEM programming and work hard to help girls achieve their dreams and prepare them for successful STEM careers.”

Aside from Barneby, Bankowski and Erlenkotter, other women on the STEM Advisory Committee are Lourdes Alvarez, University of New Haven; Anne Bartosewicz-Mele, Burns & McDonnell; Manon Cox, Protein Sciences; Karen Ellis, MMS Education; Samantha Goodman, Girl Scouts of Connecticut; Margaret Hansen-Kaplan, Girl Scouts of Connecticut; Kim McLean, Electric Boat; Jessica Rich, The Walker Group; and Ellyn Savard, Girl Scouts of Connecticut
