The cooling centers are the Stamford Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd., Stamford Fire Headquarters, 629 Main St. and Long Ridge Fire Company, 366 Long Ridge Road, a news release from the city’s office of Public Safety, Health, and Wellness, said. Each will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the public’s convenience.

People also are encouraged to visit other indoor public places, such as the Ferguson Library and Stamford Town Center, to stay out of the heat, and avoid the risk of heat stroke, the release said.

The signs of heat stroke are a body temperature of 105 degree or higher, hot and dry skin with red spots, mental confusion, loss of consciousness and convulsions, the release said. If you experience any symptoms, you should visit an emergency room or doctor’s office.

To avoid the following the city suggests:

? Have your doctor’s phone number available at all times.

? Drink liquids even if you’re not thirsty, preferably without alcohol, sugar or caffeine.

? Stay indoors in air-conditioning.

? Wear lightweight, light colored, loose clothing.

? Check in adults at risk and on kids more than usual.

? Limit your outdoor activity as much as possible, and if you have to go out try to do so in the early mornings or at night.

? Protect yourself by wearing sunscreen and hats with large brims.
