The following locations will be used as cooling centers until July 17, the Stamford Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd., will be open each day from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Stamford Fire Department Headquarters, 629 Main St., from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Long Ridge Fire House, 366 Long Ridge Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. People can also go to public buildings such as the Ferguson Library or Stamford Town Center to get out of the weather, a city news release said.
With the extreme heat, the city asks you take the following precautions:
? Have your doctor’s phone number at hand.
? Drink more fluids, without alcohol, caffeine, or high sugar counts, even if you’re not thirsty.
? Stay in air conditioning places. Use fans and take cool showers and baths if air conditioning is not available.
? Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
? Never leave any person or pet in a parked car.
? Check in on senior citizens and others that are more at risk for heat risk.
? Limit outdoor activity. If you do have to go outside, rest in shaded areas, wear sun block, and wide brimmed hats.
People should also know the signs of heat stroke, and call 911, or visit an emergency room if you experience any of the symptoms. The signs are: body temperature greater than 105 degrees, skin that is hot and dry with red spots, mental confusion, loss of consciousness, and convulsions, the release said.
